American Independence day Celebrations Macharaviaya, with Cannons, Gunpowder and period costumes, this small village, Macharaviaya, with less than 400 inhabitants, in the Malaga Province, celebrates the 4th of July Festival, that is the AMERICAN INDEPENDANCE DAY……Why?
It is the place of origin of The Gálvez Family. Bernardo de Gálvez was born in Macharaviaya in 1746 and succeeded in taking Pensacola from the English in 1781, playing an extremely important role for the Americans, helping them obtain their independence during the war against the English. This victory is considered one of the most decisive for the final triumph of the American Troops over the English Army. Two American Cities are twinned with the village of Macharaviaya, Pensacola and Galveston. Galveston a town on Texas, in the Gulf of Mexico, is named Galveston in homage to Bernardo de Galvez.
The village and the Gálvez family are responsible for another historical event. They founded the first fee public school in Spain in 1782. In this school corporal punishment was also forbidden. The school still exists today, but it has seen several changes over time.
Macharaviaya is also known a The Little Madrid, having an opulent past with thanks to The Gálvez Family. Due to their status , they opened The Royal Factory of Card Games, in the village, with the monopoly of sales of the packs of cards being in The Americas. The Opulence generated from the wealth created, earned it the nickname “Little Madrid” The Gálvez family have been true Ambassadors for the province of Malaga, even being The First Promotors of the famous Malaga Wine, made from Muscatel Grapes, on European tables and especially in Russia.
There is a family museum, a mausoleum and a statue of Bernardo de Gálvez.
