Our First Stop is Setenil de las Bodegas, affectionately known as The Flintstone Village. This unique, unusual white village is built inside a canyon, with the houses being built into the rock. It has to be seen to be believed. Take the Tuc Tuc, relax in one of the many bars. Before we take a short drive to Alcala del villa for the Asparagus Festival.
Asparagus Festival…….I can hear you thinking what next?
This festival is celebrating far more than asparagus, it’s celebrating a living, employment, wealth, family stability and an industry for the town. What not all that long ago could have been another derelict town due to lack of employment and industry, is now thriving due to this monoculture (Asparagus) being introduced in the 90’s.
There are now 600 hectares producing asparagus which is exported nationally and to other European Countries. The annual production is estimated at around 1,000,000 kilos with more than 5,000,000 plants, this keeps many of the townspeople employed.
Free Asparagus Tasting, Agrifood and Artisan Market, Live performances, tourist train and other activities on offer ,
